I pledge allegiance to Allah, to God
not the God of presidents
or bombs
but Allah,
the Compassionate, the Merciful.
Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem:
in the name of Allah,
I pledge allegiance
to a world without genocide,
without carceral slavery,
as al-Qahhar, as-Salam,
the Peaceful Subduer
wishes.

I pledge allegiance to Allah,
O’Gentle Allah, al-Latif
that you might remind me
and all those I love
to be gentle
with ourselves
and each other
in times
of
powerful struggle
and
revolutionary rest.

I pledge allegiance to Allah,
al-Ghafur, al-Karim,
Forgiving and Generous
‘till the end
of days,
long outlasting
human error
but never forgetting
us
and our
messy, imperfect beauty.

I pledge allegiance to Allah,
because there’s not
much
to count on,
these days,
so let me have
this
one thing,
this
One God
Who lets me,
me,
see the Truth—
al-Haqq—
of injustices
around the globe
from Palestine
to Sudan.

I pledge allegiance to Allah,
Who asks me
to stand
Witness,
ash-Shahid,
Who asks me,
asks us all,
to take a stand
and Testify
and be a Helping Friend
to all,
just like
Allah,
al-Waliyy,
is to me.
